Why I Paint Portraits?
The human face never ceases to amaze me. It can’t help expressing something of the inner person, yet so often struggles to conceal it. Even behind a poker face, we may sense that something is going on.
I actually began as an actor and puppeteer, training in theater education at Emerson College. I sculpted puppet heads, with the goal of capturing a compelling expression or portraying the essence of the character which the puppet represented. And then, as Creative Director of the London Jewish Puppet Theater, I strove to imbue my puppets and the whole production with that emotional intensity that gives drama its unique power.
Some years later and back in the Boston area, I had the opportunity to work in a Senior Living community – and there the faces surrounding me revealed a subtlety and depth of expression that could only have been crafted by the years and by their layers of experience. They inspired me to explore oil painting – the classic way of capturing the essence of expression and the human spirit.
